2 / Mercantile Marine Department
The main functions of the Mercantile Marine Departments are to administer the various Merchant Shipping Laws and Rules framed under the Merchant-Shipping Act. They also act as the local arm of the DG, Shipping for yacht surveys.
Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Mumbai is one of five district offices, others being in Chennai, Kandla, Kochi and Kolkata.
While their key role is in the management of Goa's Inland waterways, sail boats require their permission to use the jetty at Panaji or the jetties upriver on the Chapora and the Mandovi rivers.
